A man was killed early Thursday after the car he was driving hit a pole and split in half in Mississauga, on Eglinton Avenue near Tomken Road, Peel Regional Police say.

The man, who according to media reports was 46 and driving a newer model BMW, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Pieces of the vehicle were placed onto a flatbed tow truck after the accident occurred, around 12:10 a.m.

Police say it’s believed the car was travelling at a high speed, eastbound on Eglinton, when it hit a concrete light standard.

“There is no indication that anything¬†other than speed is a factor in this,” Const. Lilly Fitzpatrick told reporters.

One part of the car was left on the pole, while other pieces were scattered as far as 500 metres away.

The man’s name has not yet been released.
