Be square at sweet bakery

March 28, 2014
By

It may not feel like spring, but let’s celebrate the season anyway with plenty of fabulous deals, finds, fashion and an awesome food spot that’ll really bring comfort home!

SPRING MEADOW BAKERY INC. While visiting Mr. B’s warehouse sale last week, I drove by a sign that pointed me in the direction of this wonderful, whimsical little bakery spot in Mississauga: The Spring Meadow Bakery, home to the most awesome cakes, loaves, cupcakes and the famous square buttertart in a variety of flavours including pecan, raisin, cranberry and macadamia nut. Loaf cakes include apple cinnamon, banana chocolate, date and nut and more. There’s a lovely selection of biscotti made with 100% butter. In fact all the products are made with non-hydrogenated fats, with butter used in icings and cream cheeses for the carrot cakes and red velvet. Spring Meadow Bakery is actually a wholesale operation with a small retail open to the public–the sweet goods offered at deep discounts. Pretty samples to try, too. I even picked up the famous Queen Elizabeth Cake, with a moist cake and a coconut-infused icing. Yum! The bakery is located in an industrial area, the unit a bit of a ways from the street, but with plenty of parking, easy to navigate. One visit will have you back for more!

THEATRE FOR THE MASSES FOR FREE!

Bringing Toronto’s best independent theatre into the spotlight, Toronto creative producer and actor Jackie English introduces On Stage On Demand — five nights of FREE local theatre showcasing six different original plays in front of a live audience. Starting April 1 to 5 at The Great Hall (1087 Queen St W), admission is free each night but donations are encouraged at the door with proceeds going to different charities chosen by the cast of each play.

“On Stage On Demand was created to encourage Torontonians to experience more local theatre,” said English. “We have so many talented and gifted playwrights and actors in our city and with On Stage On Demand, we can showcase the best and most innovative independent theatre to new and larger audiences.”

Sixteen Toronto playwrights and actors will perform six plays over the span of five days. The featured plays include The Further Adventures of Antoine Feval, Supperfesta, 8 Days, Of Mice and Morro and Jasp, and Fleece Flesh: My Big Fat German Puppet Show with Rooster Kane’s Curio Emporium, all of which have had previous runs during the Toronto Fringe Festival and on other stages in the city.

After each production, the actors and writers will speak with the audience and answer questions about the play and the process involved in putting on a theatrical production.

Seating is limited; reserve a spot on the guest list in advance by visiting Picatic.com and selecting the play.
