Clark Leads Trout to 6-2 Victory over Knights

December 2, 2014

December 1, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

Mississauga, ON – The London Knights were in town on Sunday, paying their lone visit to the Hershey Centre for a matinee matchup. The Steelheads welcomed members of the Erindale Spitfires Minor Hockey Association for the game, presented by SmartStop Self Storage.

Sam Babintsev got the offence going in this one, testing Michael Giugovaz early and often as Mississauga jumped out to a 6-1 lead in shots. Mississauga got the first opportunity on the power play three minutes into the period. The Trout mustered several chances on rebounds surrendered by Giugovaz. A delayed call as time expired on the Steelheads man advantage saw the Knights get their first offensive chance. On the ensuing London power play, Michael McCarron snuck one five-hole on Spencer Martin. Christian Dvorak extended the Knights’ lead nearing the midway point in the period. At 13:29, Giugovaz gave up another juicy rebound on a Mikey McLeod shot and Damian Bourne got the puck to Nathan Bastian in the slot, who fired home his sixth of the season. The Steelheads were pressing as the clock ran down on the first period, and took a 20-15 lead in shots into the intermission.

The Steelheads’ third line of Bobby MacIntyre, Everett Clark and Lucas Venuto picked up the pace right where the Trout left off in the first. MacIntyre jumped on a loose puck, made a spin move to get to the front of the net, but was stopped on the chance. The Trout had a pair of power play opportunities in the middle of the frame. They didn’t convert on the first, but would pull it together on the second. Babintsev picked up the puck behind the London defence, made a move to the backhand and beat Giugovaz, but the puck trickled wide of the goal. Still on the chance, Brandon Devlin picked up a clearing attempt at the hash-marks and ripped his ninth of the season glove side. Stephen Gibson was shaken up from a high hit and was down for several seconds. Fortunately, he was able to get to the bench under his own power, but he would not return to the game. On the ensuing power play Stefan LeBlanc sent a low shot for Everett Clark, who tipped home his second goal in three games. The third line continued to roll, as Clark and MacIntyre entered the zone on a 2-on-1. Clark elected to keep, and fired home his second of the game five-hole on Giugovaz. Despite falling behind 2-0 early on, the Steelheads rallied and took a two-goal lead into the third.

Mississauga started the third period on the penalty kill, but would kill off the chance and continue to push the pace of play. Clark completed his hat trick on Mississauga’s first shot of the period. Lodge and Burnside tallied assists on the marker. Lodge continues to produce as a Steelhead as he put home his fourteenth of the season. The goal marks his fifth point in as many games with Mississauga. The Steelheads put together perhaps their most impressive offensive outing this year, totaling a season high of 52 shots in the game.
