Colts Top Steelheads in Teddy Bear Toss Game

December 14, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

Mississauga, ON – The Steelheads wrapped up their busy weekend with their annual Teddy Bear Toss game, presented by Canadian Tire in support of Canadian Tire Jumpstart and the Boys and Girl’s Club of Peel. The Barrie Colts paid their first visit to the Hershey Centre of the season. These two clubs met last Thursday in Barrie and the Colts took the game by a score of 5-3. Both teams were coming off Saturday night victories, but only one would extend their streak.

Both teams came out with energy in the matinee matchup, and the Colts jumped to an early lead in shots. 8:35 into the game, Roy Radke gave Barrie a lead as he finished off a Garrett Hooey offering. Minutes later, Hooey took a goaltender interference penalty, sending the Steelheads to the power play. The Colts seemed a step ahead of the Trout in the first period, killing off the penalty. Mississauga needed to step up after the first period to remain competitive with Barrie. Spencer Martin was put to the test, but stood strong to give the Steelheads the chance they need. Barrie took a significant 15-6 lead in shots into the second, but only a 1-0 lead.

The Steelheads came out stronger in the second, but Barrie would not let up. The Colts extended their lead to 2-0, as Hooey and Radke connected again. A too many men call on the Colts led to a power play opportunity for the Trout. Everett Clark corralled the puck in the slot and had not one, but two cracks at the goal, but McKenzie Blackwood turned him aside. At the 7:44 mark of the period, Mississauga was awarded another power play. Joseph Blandisi was sprung on a break after a Mississauga turnover, and scored short-handed. The Colts would add a fourth before Mississauga would find the scoreboard. With less than two minutes to go in the frame, Bobby MacIntyre fed Lucas Venuto in front of the net, who fired home his seventh of the season, triggering the bears to rain down on the ice.

The Colts would add insult to injury in the third period, widening their lead to 6-1. Despite the score, Sean Day had a strong showing, and was rewarded for his efforts. Near the midway point in the frame, Day was given a shift at left wing alongside Clark and Bastian. The Steelheads were simply outplayed in this matchup, but if there were a saving grace, it is that Mississauga managed 35 shots in the loss. The scoreboard read 6-1, but the Steelheads got the goal that really mattered, sending hundreds of stuffed bears onto the ice in support of Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program. The bears will be donated to kids in need this holiday season.

The Steelheads have two home games next weekend, hosting the Ottawa 67’s on Friday and the Sudbury Wolves on Sunday. Great seats are still available for both games. Log on to Ticketmaster to purchase your tickets.
