Crombie claims McCallion's support in Mississauga mayoral race

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion appears to have a favourite in the race to replace her.

McCallion spoke glowingly about mayoral candidate Bonnie Crombie’s platform on Friday at a pro-Crombie event hosted by hosted by prominent leaders of the Chinese Community.

While the speech sounds like an endorsement, the Crombie campaign stopped just short of saying the veteran mayor who is retiring after 36 years has endorsed their candidate.

“Hazel McCallion supports Bonnie Crombie’s platform,” read a statement from Crombie’s campaign on Sunday.

That statement included a video clip of McCallion’s speech posted by the Crombie campaign.

“I have every confidence that when you review it, you will vote for Bonnie Crombie,” McCallion says in the video. “I think you know me well – I say it the way it is, not politically. I’m saying it because of my experience working with her. And so I leave it up to you.

“I say to the young people: Bonnie is young and she’s ambitious, she works hard, she’s got some new ideas and I hope that those new ideas will come forward.”

Crombie is running against Steve Mahoney and several other candidates.

In a statement, Mahoney said he respects the mayor’s decision.

“There will be many more endorsements to come during the course of this campaign. I agree with Ms. Crombie when she says that this election will not be decided by any one member of city council, but by the voters,” Mahoney stated.

“This campaign is not the status quo. It is about the need for our next mayor to be an experienced leader with a plan to build an even stronger Mississauga, starting the day after election. Mississaugans understand that we cannot afford to put the future of our city into untested, inexperienced waters.

“It’s unfortunate we have to deal with politics on this weekend of Thanksgiving. My family and I would like to wish the very best of the season to all the people of Mississauga,” he added.

Quito Maggi, Mahoney’s campaign chairman, said it was “extremely poor judgement” by Crombie to issue the statement on Sunday.

“Knowing that the mayor is on a plane to China for 20 hours and that Steve is at his mother’s deathbed right now,” Maggi told the Sun. “They’re aware of both those facts … to release this today on Thanksgiving, just poor judgement in my opinion.”
