Early Attack in Owen Sound

March 1, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

MISSISSAUGA, ON –Entering their third game in three days, the Mississauga Steelheads were looking for a victory against their 2011 OHL Championship rivals in the Owen Sound Attack. With a busy schedule in the OHL that featured the Petes, 67’s, IceDogs and Bulls in action it was an evening that was crucial to the Eastern Conference Playoff Picture. Unfortunately for Mississauga, it quickly got off on the wrong foot.

Off the opening faceoff, Holden Cook was able to break in alone and beat Spencer Martin to give Owen Sound a 1-0 lead just twelve seconds into the game. It wouldn’t be very long before the Attack found themselves adding to the lead, as Brett Hargrave skated to the net and got a stick on the puck in the crease to make it 2-0 at the 3:44 mark of the first. Following a timeout called by James Boyd, Martin and the Steelheads would settle down. Mississauga would finally find themselves with a scoring chance after Brett Foy dropped the gloves, as his attempt to spark the team got Andrew Goldberg going; unfortunately a great individual effort would not beat Brandon Hope. The trout would find their next chance on a powerplay later in the period as Sam Babintsev headed to the net, however Hope was once again up to the challenge. The Attack would hold their 2-0 lead as they headed into the intermission, also ahead on shots 12-9.

“We just need to settle down and play our game, get on their defense…we’ll be good” — Josh Burnside

Owen Sound would find themselves on the power play five minutes into the third period, and they would take full advantage of the extra man as Spencer Martin was tied up, opening up an empty cage for Kyle Platzer to make it 3-0 Attack. The Steelheads refused to give up however, coming right back the other way with pressure of their own as they sent bodies to the front of the net. Unfortunately the pressure would subside as two minor penalties sent the teams to 4-on-4 hockey, followed by an Attack power play. Mississauga was able to weather the storm, however, earning a power play of their own to end the second period.

Coming out firing, Mississauga pressed to get on the board; following the power play the Trout would sustain pressure, but still found themselves frustrated by Brandon Hope. Despite no call on the ice, the Steelheads would appear to score as the officials called a play under review — despite it not working out to be a Mississauga goal, the team would turn up the heat in the third period with a number of great chances. Goldberg would finally break through with just under five minutes to play, roofing a puck in close on the power play with assists to Babintsev and Greg DiTomaso. The goal provided new life for Mississauga, as Jesse Barwelldrove to the net, generating a chance for Goldberg’s second marker of the game. Sam Babintsev would come back down the ice and ring a post late in the game, nearly tying the game for Mississauga. The Steelheads would find their final chance come late in the game when DiTomaso’s stick exploded at the blueline, leaving Kyle Hope with a clear path to the empty net to seal the game for Owen Sound.

Mississauga returns to action this Tuesday night in Ottawa.
