More than half of Mississauga voters say they will vote for Councillor Bonnie Crombie, the latest poll from Forum Research shows.

Crombie would get 56 per cent of the vote, the poll says, compared to her main rival Steve Mahoney who would get 31 per cent.

Very few will vote Stephen King (4 per cent) or any other candidate.

Three weeks ago, Mahoney and Crombie were essentially tied, with Mahoney in a slight lead by four per cent.

Since then, Mayor Hazel McCallion has endorsed Councillor Crombie for mayor.

“It is clear that the royal touch of Queen Hazel has had the desired effect, and Bonnie Crombie is now firmly in the lead, after going neck and neck with Steve Mahoney for months. It is interesting that not only Crombie’s approvals have increased as a result of her anointment, so have Hazel’s,” said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff.

In terms of election issues, 38 per cent of respondents say keeping taxes low is the most important. Otherwise, 21 per cent jobs and growth were the most important and 18 per cent said rapid transit is.

Among the least important issues listed were ethics and transparency at city hall (10 per cent), policing (4 per cent) or solid waste removal (2 per cent).

The poll was conducted among 769 Mississauga voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 per cent, 19 out of 20 times.
