The sister of a 43-year-old Thornhill woman who was killed in a Mississauga hotel room before it was set on fire is praying that justice will be served.

Evelyn Bumatay Castillo was found without vital signs after fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Quality Inn on Britannia Road East, near Hurontario Street.

She was rushed to hospital where she later died.

The coroner ruled her death was a result of foul play and the Homicide unit was called in to investigate. The exact cause of death has not been released.

Castillo, who was born in the Philippines, came to Canada in January 2013 to work as a nanny for a family with three children.

The victim’s sister, who didn’t want to be identified, told CityNews that the two of them were going to go to Niagara-on-the-Lake on Sunday but plans fell through at the last minute.

She said the plan was to meet her sister at the hotel after Sunday mass and then the two would head down to the Niagara area. But when she realized it was Thanksgiving and traffic would prevent her from getting back to work on time, she said had to cancel.

She said the last time she had contact with her sister was on Saturday when Castillo texted to say that she had decided to stay in the Mississauga hotel anyway.

“I hope and pray there is justice for my sister,” her sister said. “(she was a) sweet, loving sister. Very caring.”

There has been no word on suspects.

Castillo is Peel Region’s fifth homicide of the year.
