Fatal Mississauga stabbing victim ID'd as Zack Jelovsek

October 19, 2014

Peel Regional Police say a house party in Mississauga ended early Saturday with one man dead and another in hospital.

The young men were stabbed during a fight outside a residence at 136 Rainbow Cres. in the Erin Mills Parkway and Burnhamthorpe Road area at around 1:30 a.m.

Neighbour Amanda Avery told CBC News she spotted a group of party-goers a few doors down from her house around midnight. An hour later, the crowd had grown dramatically and, soon, was fleeing frantically across her front lawn.

“All of a sudden it became hysterical screaming,” Avery told CBC News. “I looked out the window and there was about a hundred kids just flocking.”

From another window she saw young girls hiding behind her car, “crying on the ground, curled up in little balls.”

One victim, 19-year-old Zack Jelovsek, was found on the ground when police arrived. An officer performed CPR but Jelovsek later died in hospital.

The other victim, aged 20, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. It’s not clear if the two men knew each other.

Truck sped away

Avery said some people tried to stop a vehicle from leaving the area.

“There was a truck that they were trying to get it not to leave the scene and a bunch of people were hitting it, smashing it and he … peeled off really quickly,” she said.

There was such a large crowd at the party, officers called in city buses to take witnesses to a nearby police station.

Police have not released a suspect description, nor have they found a weapon.

“There was quite a number of people situated within one of the residences but it looks like the incident itself took place outside,” said Const. George Tudos

Forensic and homicide investigators remained on the scene Saturday.

Police are urging any witnesses to come forward with any details of the attack.
