November 2, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

Mississauga, ON – The Steelheads came out with energy in the Sunday matinee against the Niagara IceDogs. Just three minutes into the contest, Marcus Dickerson potted his second goal of the season over the glove of Niagara’s Brent Moran. The goal came courtesy of a centering feed from Everett Clark, and Adam Donnelly tallied the other assist. Cody Payne had a couple of chances early for the IceDogs, but Spencer Martin denied him from scoring. With the Steelheads on the penalty kill, Bryson Cianfrone created a turnover, took the puck the other way and fired home his third of the season just under the blocker of Moran. Midway through the period, Niagara would squeak a puck behind Martin, but the defence were there to eliminate the threat. The Trout were out-chancing the IceDogs, with shots after were 15-11 in favour of the Trout.

In the early minutes of the middle frame, both teams traded chances on the man advantage, but neither could capitalize. Martin made a number of key saves to preserve the Steelheads’ lead. Damian Bourne has continued his physical play of late and made his presence on the ice known. Niagara’s Aaron Haydon left the ice in obvious discomfort after going down awkwardly in the corner, but would stay in the game. 15 minutes into the period, the Trout were short-handed for the third time in the game. Vince Dunn would fire home a shot past a screened Martin. The Steelheads allowed just their second power play goal of the season at home. Mikkel Aagaard and Blake Siebenaler assisted on the goal. The Steelheads still held a lead in shots; 28-22 through two periods.

The Trout sustained pressure in the early moments of the third period. Babintsev had a chance at goal as Moran was sprawling, but he sent a shot just over the crossbar. Zach Wilkie almost cost his team a goal, as a miscommunication on a backward pass almost caught an unsuspecting Moran by surprise. Just after the midway point in the third period, the Steelheads had a power play opportunity, for only the second time in the contest. Both teams were energized in the period, as Niagara was trying to complete the comeback, but both goalies remained posed and kept the score at 2-1. With under a minute to go, Moran was called to the bench in favour of an extra skater and Niagara would take a timeout. The Trout would take a late penalty and were forced to finish the game a man down. Despite a scoring chance, the IceDogs fell short of tying the game and the Steelheads held on for the 2-1 win.

The Mississauga News three stars of the game were Bryson Cianfrone, Marcus Dickerson and Spencer Martin. The Steelheads head to Belleville on Wednesday before returning home to host the IceDogs again, Friday, November 7th at 7:30 pm. Great tickets are still available online through Ticketmaster and at the Hershey Centre box office.
