Generals Take 2-0 Series Lead

March 23, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Oshawa Generals

The Generals hosted the Mississauga Steelheads for Game 2 of the first round of the 2014 Playoffs Sunday night at the General Motors Centre. Oshawa came into the game with a 1-0 series lead, and were looking to go up two games to none heading into Games 3 4 in Mississauga on Tuesday and Thursday.

A close first period saw shots almost even heading into the middle part of the frame. After penalties were traded between both teams, some 4-on-4 play opened up the ice. Daniel Altshuller was riding a shutout streak that was heading into the 75 minute mark before Lucas Venuto slid around the Generals netminder to put home the Steelheads first goal of the playoffs on the power play.

Trailing Mississauga 1-0 late in the period, the Generals laid on the pressure after going to a man-advantage. Even after a barrage of shots towards Spencer Martin, the score stood at 1-0 in favour of the Steelheads heading into the second.

Things got a little tense in the General Motors Centre when Brett Foy sniped his first of the playoffs passed Altshuller to give the Steelheads a 2-0 lead. But the Generals pushed back in the later part of the period. Bradley Latour got Oshawa back in the game with his first of the playoffs to cut the Steelheads lead to 2-1.

There were another tense couple moments at the end of the second when the Generals went down a man. Altshuller and his goalposts came up big to keep it a one goal game heading into the third.

Josh Sterk tied the game at 2-2 with his third of the playoffs early in the third frame on the power play. The goal gave the Generals new life as they headed into another man advantage shortly after. Even with a flurry of activity in front of the Steelheads net, the Generals could not find the go-ahead goal.

With neither team solving the goaltenders through the rest of the third, the game headed to overtime. The Generals got a break just over seven minutes into the extra frame, when they were awarded a power play. Cole Cassels was the hero on the power play in overtime, burying the OT winner and giving the Generals a 2-0 series lead.

Oshawa travels to Mississauga for Games 3 4 on Tuesday and Thursday night for 7:30PM puck drops, in hopes of putting a strangle hold on the series.
