Girl falls from 4th-floor window in Mississauga

August 17, 2014

A four-year-old girl suffered serious injuries after falling from a fourth-floor window at a Mississauga apartment building Wednesday.

Peel Regional Police Const. Thomas Ruttan said the child fell from a building at 480 Lakeshore Rd. E., near Cawthra Rd., around 11:40 a.m. She was initially transported to a local hospital but was then transferred to a trauma unit with serious injuries.

Ruttan said investigators have determined there is “no criminality” involved in the incident.

“The child is being looked at by doctors,” he said. “We’re hopeful that everything turns out OK.”

At the apartment building, the ripped screen from the window flitted back and forth in the wind. The window remained open.

Residents reacted with a mix of shock and sadness to news of the incident.

Muhamed Atili, who lives on the second floor, said he often sees the little girl playing outside and riding her bike. He said his heart goes out the girl’s parents.

“Everybody who has kids understands how terrible this is,” he said. “She’s just little girl. You feel so sorry for the parents.”

It’s not clear what caused the child to fall but several building residents told the Toronto Sun the girl was at the window talking to children playing on the ground below when she fell.
