MISSISSAUGA — The Canadian Border Services Agency has ensured that a shipment of heroin won’t be hitting the streets after seizing more than nine kilograms of the drug at Pearson International Airport last month.

Border services officers examined a shipment of boxes on March 25 that were marked as clothing items. The cargo had been identified as potentially high risk by the CBSA’s national targeting centre, which reviews advanced cargo information before shipments are loaded at foreign ports or before they hit the Canadian border.

Upon further examination, officers discovered a large yellow package inside one of the boxes. The package was filled with an off-white powder that tested positive for heroin.

The drugs have been turned over to Peel Regional Police.

CBSA officers made 367 narcotics seizures at Pearson airport in 2013.
