IceDogs Catch 4-3 Shootout Win against Steelheads

December 7, 2013
By

December 6, 2013 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Niagara IceDogs

The Niagara IceDogs got December off to a great start, picking up a big 4-3 shootout victory over the Central Division rival Steelheads in Mississauga on Friday.

The game would be scoreless for much of the first period, but unfortunately Mississauga would score twice in the final 4:28 of the frame, the second with 3.7 seconds remaining, to send the IceDogs into the intermission down 2-0. Shots in the first were 16-4 Mississauga.

The IceDogs would turn things around in the second stanza, as Eric Ming would extend his goal scoring streak to six games, striking on the powerplay to cut the IceDogs deficit in half at the 5:54 mark of the period! Niagara would continue to pressure Mississauga looking for the equalizer and they would finally get it with just over four minutes to go in the frame as Vince Dunn would strike with his second career OHL goal and second goal in as many games to make it a 2-2 game. That would be it for scoring in the second as the teams headed to the third all tied up. Shots after 40 minutes were 21-15 Mississauga.

In the third, the IceDogs would strike 5:43 in to take their first lead of the night, as Matt Gillard would put home his first career OHL goal to make it a 3-2 game. Unfortunately for the IceDogs, the lead would not last, and Mississauga would answer back with a shorthanded goal to knot things up again at 3-3 just over four minutes later. Each team would have their chances throughout the rest of the third, but Brent Moran and Spencer Martin would shut things down to send things to overtime. Shots after regulation were 31-19 for the home side.

In overtime, the IceDogs would have their chances at the winner, outshooting the Steelheads 6-2 in the extra frame, but they would be denied the overtime winner as things headed to a shootout.

In the shootout, Mississauga would start things off with a goal, but Brendan Perlini would knot things back up in the second round. Moran would then stop four straight Steelhead shooters before Jordan Maletta would strike in the fifth round to give the IceDogs a big 4-3 shootout victory to start their December schedule off right!

The IceDogs will now return to St. Catharines where they will play host to the visiting Central Division rival North Bay Battalion at the Gatorade Garden City Complex for their annual Teddy Bear Toss Game! Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm and fans are encouraged to bring their new or gently used stuffed animals to throw on the ice after the IceDogs first goal. All stuffed animals collected will go to Victim Services Niagara, who will distribute them to children throughout the Niagara Region. Fans who bring a stuffed animal to tomorrow’s game will receive a voucher for a free ticket to the December 12th or 31st IceDogs home game to thank them for their donation. Tickets for tomorrow and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at any IceDogs ticketing location.

Don’t miss out on your chance to help put a smile on a child’s face this holiday season, get your ticket now and come help us celebrate our Teddy Bear Toss game tomorrow night!
