IceDogs Lose Home Opener Heartbreaker to Mississauga 6-5 in OT

September 20, 2013

September 19, 2013 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Niagara IceDogs

Niagara IceDogs lost a heartbreaker to the visiting Mississauga Steelheads by a score of 6-5 in overtime in front of a sellout crowd of 3,145 in their 2013/14 home opener on Thursday night.

The IceDogs new season got off to a great start as Jesse Graham would open the scoring only 1:17 into the first period to give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead. Less than 20 seconds later, Carter Verhaeghe would keep the great start going, pushing one past the line to extend the IceDogs lead to two. Mississauga would answer back scoring their first of the contest just past the 5 minute mark to make it 2-1. Undeterred, the IceDogs Graham Knott, in his OHL debut, would score his first career OHL goal to give the IceDogs a 3-1 lead barely minute later at the 6:14 mark. Mississauga would score again just prior to the midway point of the frame to cut the IceDogs lead to one again at 3-2. The teams would exchange chances throughout the rest of the first but the IceDogs would carry that same 3-2 lead into the first intermission. Shots after one favoured Niagara 12-11.

The second period would see Mississauga up the pressure, outshooting the Icedogs 19-10 in the frame. Despite the pressure, the IceDogs starting goaltender Brent Moran would be solid in the period, keeping Mississauga off the scoreboard. Late in the period, at the 19:35 mark, Ben Hughes would strike to extend the IceDogs lead and send the teams into the second intermission with the IceDogs up 4-2.

The IceDogs lead would be cut in half once again early in the third as Mississauga would waste score less than a minute into the frame to make it a 4-3 game. The IceDogs would bounce back quickly however as Brendan Perlini would rip one home on a partial breakaway, restoring the IceDogs two goal lead once again at the 6:52 mark. Mississauga would not go away however as they would score their fourth goal of the contest with less than 5 remaining to make it a 5-4 game. The IceDogs would battle in an attempt to put the game away, but heartbreak would strike with only 15 seconds remaining as Mississauga would score with the extra attacker to make it a 5-5 game.

In overtime, the IceDogs would battle hard but unfortunately the visiting Steelheads would find the back of the net first to give them a 6-5 overtime win.

The IceDogs will now have a week off before travelling to Kingston for their first away game on September 27th. The IceDogs next home game will be on Thursday, October 3rd against North Bay. Tickets for this and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
