Member of Parliament Brad Butt Announces Funding for a Cenotaph Restoration in the Village of Streetsville, Mississauga

MISSISSAUGA, On, Nov. 9, 2013 /CNW/ – On behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Brad Butt,
Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Streetsville, today announced a
contribution of up to $25,000 for a cenotaph restoration project in the
village of Streetsville, Mississauga, Ontario. The memorial honours the
local citizens who died in the First and Second World Wars.

“Monuments and cenotaphs are permanent symbols of the pride and
gratitude Canadians share for our nation’s truest heroes,” said
Minister Fantino. “Our Government is proud to support the building and
restoration of cenotaphs and monuments in communities across the
country to honour Canada’s Veterans and men and women in uniform.”

“This restored cenotaph will continue to be a focal point for residents
to come together for remembrance activities,” said MP Butt. “It will be
a lasting reminder of the service and sacrifices of our country’s

The City of Mississauga is relocating the cenotaph to a more prominent
location within the village of Streetsville and undertaking extensive
masonry work to repair damages to the cenotaph. Once restored, the
cenotaph will be reinstalled on a new concrete base surrounded by
granite paving. The site will be further enhanced with lighting, a
steel railing and landscaping.

Funding for this initiative is provided through the Cenotaph/Monument
Restoration Program. Through this program, the Government of Canada
works in partnership with community groups and local organizations to
ensure that cenotaphs and monuments honouring our nation’s heroes are
conserved to the highest standard of care and dignity. Applications to
this program by interested non-profit groups and other organizations
can be submitted at any time during the year and are reviewed on a
