Mississauga give up digital devices for 23 hours for distracted driving awareness

October 5, 2013

MISSISSAUGA – Students at a Mississauga high school gave up their digital devices, including smartphones, for 23 hours to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.

Rick Hansen Secondary School has designated the month of October as safe driving awareness month.

From Thursday to Friday, some 60 students gave up all personal devices for a full 23 hours. Some also slept at the school during the tech “detox.”

The event is 23 hours, the school said, because drivers are 23 times more likely to crash if they are texting.

Students are also asking others to participate in a similar event from Nov. 22-23, for the national Distraction-Free 23 pledge day.

In North America, distracted driving is a factor in an estimated four million vehicle crashes each year.
