Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion turns 93

TORONTO – Hazel McCallion has reached the young age of 93 on Friday and 35 of those years have been spent as the mayor of Mississauga.

“Hurricane Hazel” is one of the best known and longest-serving mayors in Canada, having been elected in 1978.

McCallion is entering her final term as the leader of the sixth largest city in the country.

Just before Christmas, she told Global News one of her biggest regrets was not paying enough attention to transportation solutions.

“Even in Toronto – they don’t an adequate transit system for the growth that has occurred in Toronto,” McCallion said in a sit-down interview with Global News. “If they don’t have an adequate [transit system] you can imagine that we don’t have an adequate transit system.”

Mississauga is still in the process of installing Metrolinx-funded light rail transit along Hurontario Street.

With just a year left in her term, McCallion also hopes to lobby the upper levels of government for a bigger share of funding and increased municipal powers.
