Imagine you’re a 10-year-old playing novice hockey, and suddenly you’re hugging the greatest hockey trophy of all time.

The teammates on Mississauga’s Meadowvale Hawks thought it was just another Sunday afternoon practice, but then received the surprise of their lives.

“We walked into this room and suddenly we see this cup. Oh my goodness, it’s the Stanley Cup,” an excited Luke Tesser said.

The Hawks, which are part of the Mississauga Hockey League, were chosen to get up close and personal with the Stanley Cup, as part of Scotiabank’s Surprise and Delight campaign.

For the only girl on the team, Alison Boardman, it was a great moment.

“We got to see the Stanley Cup and we got to hug it a lot,” she said.

The Hawks earned this special celebration because they put together a couple of charity events to raise money to fight cancer.

They also got their pictures taken with the cup, and before retuning to the ice, the players gathered around hockey’s iconic silverware for a team chant.

“We are so excited to bring the Stanley Cup to the Meadowvale Hawks as part of the Scotiabank Surprise and Delight campaign,” Sandra Dunnett, a Scotiabank branch manager said in a release on Sunday.

“The Stanley Cup is such a tremendous example of what can be achieved through teamwork, sportsmanship and camaraderie.”

Scotiabank, through its Bright Future philanthropic program, supports over 5,000 minor hockey teams in communities across Canada.
