Mississauga native Stauskas makes ACC debut vs. Raptors

TORONTO –

Sometimes, Kings rookie Nik Stauskas has a hard time wrapping his head around the fact that he is in the NBA.

The Mississauga native grew up a die-hard Raptors fan and said he still checks in from time to time on how they and his favourite players are doing.

“I’ve tried to turn off that part, but it’s really difficult. I still see myself everyday, going on my Sportscentre app and checking how many points LeBron had or who won this game,” Stauskas said before Sacramento took on Toronto.

“When you’re a kid, you look at these guys like they’re not human, at least that’s how I saw them growing up. You’ve just got to realize everyone puts their pants on the same way in the morning, they’re just like you, and we’re all competing against each other.”

Stauskas said he was expecting about 200 family and friends to be in attendance for what he expected to be a surreal evening.

“It’s going to be a great experience, hopefully it’s a good atmosphere out there, for me, I’ve been in this buiding 100 times as a fan, this is my first time as a pro, and I’ve just got to go out there and treat it like any other game, just play with a clear mind and go out there and have fun,” Stauskas said.

Stauskas, the No. 8 overall selection last summer, has struggled to adapt to the league so far, averaging just 14.2 minutes in 41 appearances. The sharp-shooter has connected on just 28% of his three-point attempts so far and is averaging 3.7 points.

Still, teammate Ben McLemore looked like a bust as a rookie and has emerged as one of the NBA’s top second-year players, providing a template for Stauskas to follow.

“Yeah. I’ve obviously struggled this year,” said the former Michigan superstar.

“Everybody’s just told me keep my head up. Ben kind of went through the same things as I have this year. Everybody’s just told me keep working hard, keep my head up and good things will come.”

Stauskas scored eight points, following up an 11-point effort against Golden State.
