Mississauga students to give up digital devices for 23 hours

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Students at a Mississauga high school will be giving up their digital devices, including smartphones, for 23 hours to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.

Rick Hansen Secondary School has designated the month of October as safe driving awareness month.

From Thursday to Friday, students will give up all personal devices for a full 23 hours. They can also sleep at the school during the tech “detox.”

The event is 23 hours, the school said, because drivers are 23 times more likely to crash if they’re texting.

Students are also asking others to participate in a similar event from Nov. 22-23, for the national Distraction-Free 23 pledge day.
