Mississauga's Nik Stauskas named Big Ten player of the year

BROOKLYN –

The Canadian NCAA hoops takeover continues.

Michigan guard Nik Stauskas of Mississauga was named Big Ten Conference player of the year on Monday. Stauskas was the only unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten first team as voted by coaches and media after averaging 17.4 points, 3.4 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game as a sophomore.

Mostly a shooting specialist for a team that went to the Final Four in his freshman year, Stauskas improved his overall game significantly, becoming a capable point guard at times, while still boosting his three-point shooting percentage to 45.8% from 44%.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling especially with the amount of hard work I put in over the summer,” Stauskas told the Sun Monday evening.

“It’s an honour and I feel very lucky.”

Stauskas also thanked his “teammates, coaches, friends and family for supporting me through everything! #GoBlue,” in a tweet.

Michigan won the Big Ten title and is the top seed at the conference tourney.

Stauskas grew up idolizing the Raptors and Vince Carter and even got to play against Carter as a kid at the ACC. Now, he’s looking to make his mark again at the NCAA tournament (he made all six of his three-pointers in Michigan’s Elite Eight win over Florida last year) and then likely will be on his way to the NBA, where he’s considered a potential lottery pick.

Stauskas joins Brampton’s Melvin Ejim, an Iowa State forward who was voted Big 12 player of the year, and Toronto’s Daniel Mullings, a talented New Mexico State guard who won the same award as the Western Athletic Conference’s top player.

Various other Canadians won a number of awards and Stauskas, Vaughan’s Andrew Wiggins of Kansas and Brampton’s Tyler Ennis of Syracuse made the final list of 15 for the Wooden award as NCAA player of the year.
