November 16, 2014 – National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) Mississauga Power

(Mississauga, ON – )The Hershey Centre experienced a battle to the very end despite the Mississauga Power dropping their second game in a row to the London Lightning with a 113-102 loss.

The Power rushed to an 8-2 lead off the hands of power forward Travis Releford and guard Tut Rauch with consecutive baskets from beyond the arc. However, Mississauga’s lead was short lived as London pressured the Power into a few turnovers and bad possessions to pull ahead 14-8. The back-and-forth style finally evened out by the five minute mark and Mississauga was within one point of London’s 17 thanks to a clutch three from forward Kirk Williams Jr.

Both squads were settled in and battled on an even keel, but London was dominating the paint despite Power defenders sacrificing their bodies around the basket. London had a 29-24 lead at the end of the quarter, with 20 of those points scored in the paint.

Mississauga had some ground to cover and began to chip away by doing the little things. Releford took a charge and that kick started a Power surge with a three from Alex Johnson and rebounded dunk from Michael Allison. Allison, in his first game since an ankle injury, was hustling under the basket and muscling his way through the Lightning for rebounds. The fight was there but London continued to have control of the half and took a 55-46 lead into the half.

London kick-started the second half with a steal for a lay-up and continued to keep a hold on Mississauga’s offence. The by six minute mark the Lightning had already scored 19 points to Mississauga’s five and had a commanding 76-51 lead.

Guard Omar Strong carried the team in the third quarter with strong consistency from beyond the arc. Strong scored about half of his points in that quarter alone, ending off with 13. He sparked new Power big-man Donald Johnson to step up his game and ended the quarter with a long buzzer beater. London’s 27 point lead diminished to 86-60.

Johnson kept the spark alive with three identical drives to cut London’s lead down to ten. There was a renewed confidence for the Mississauga team as they rallied to a seven point deficit with strong drives through the paint and on point shooting from three point land. With 3:17 left in the game the Power were outscoring the Lightning 21-14. The Power were in too far of a hole to catch up and lost 113-102.

Omar Strong has been on a roll and led the Power with 21 points followed by Travis Releford’s 15 points and eight rebound performance.

The Power will have four days off until their next match up with the Saint John Mill Rats at home on
