Power Lose Valentine's Day Battle to A's

February 14, 2015 – National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) Mississauga Power

(Mississauga, ON – ) The Peel Region Rivalry continued on a special Valentine’s Day event with a lot of love in the air for the notorious match-up. Despite a surge in the fourth quarter Mississauga fell 110-99. The Peak Performer of the Game went to Paul Cooper with a dominating 17 point and seven rebound display. Warren Ward and newcomer Grant Malcolm both led the team with 20 points in the bitter loss.

Warren Ward and Tyrone Garland propelled the Power to an early 7-2 lead but Brampton woke up to tie things up at 9 apiece. The two teams exchanged leads for the rest of the way but it was the A’s who came out on top with a 23-21 advantage.

The A’s found their rhythm and went on a scoring tirade for 30 points. Guard Tut Rauch and forward Marcus Capers put forth some sweet execution of their own and gave the fans an exciting alley-oop. But Mississauga couldn’t match Brampton’s lock down on the second quarter with execution on both ends of the floor and fell 53-44 at the half.

The second half was a different story with centre Paul Cooper writing it nearly all on his own. Cooper opened the scoring with an offensive rebound and used that opportunity to get fouled under the basket. After two made free throws Coop did it again and drew the foul right in front of the basket for the and-one. Cooper’s hot hand downed 11 points but Mississauga couldn’t build on Cooper’s streak and instead picked up a handful of fouls that fueled the A’s. The Power were in too deep and trailed 87-64 at the buzzer.

Brampton stuck a dagger with a wide open three to start off the final frame. But forward Doug Thomas replied with a finger roll and sent the Power a roll. Ward heated up from downtown and assisted a sprinting guard Jabs Newby who made a three-point play with a trip to the line. The margin was still wide open at a 20 point spread but Mississauga showed some life. Thomas stepped up with a huge block and Warren drained his second three pointer in a row. The Power cut Brampton’s lead down to ten then guard Jordan Weidner nailed an absolutely clutch three pointer that got the Hershey Centre on their feet and the Power knocking on the door 96-89. The A’s stayed the course and pulled ahead 103-91 and eventually extinguished the Power’s comeback to win 110-99.

The Power play on Feb. 17 for another showdown with the Windsor Express at 7 p.m.
