Saginaw Outlasts Mississauga Behind Alexeev's Hat Trick Performance

October 12, 2013

October 11, 2013 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Saginaw Spirit

The Saginaw Spirit traveled to Mississauga to take on the Steelheads at the Hershey Centre on Friday, October 11th. The Spirit came out on top of the Steelheads by a score, 5-3.

Mississauga started the scoring in the first period via a powerplay goal off the stick of Dylan Smoskowitz assisted by Sam Babintsev and Trevor Carrick with 6 minutes remaining. Saginaw’s Dylan Sadowy evened the score with 4 minutes to play in the first period on a backhand goal, his first of the season, with assists from Justin Kea and Terry Trafford. Then in a blink of an eye, Sadowy was at it again netting a go-ahead goal 19 seconds later assisted by Justin Kea. Not to be outdone, Andrey Alexeev delivered an unassisted goal just 23 seconds after Sadowy’s second goal to put the Spirit ahead of the Steelheads, 3-1.

The second period started in similar fashion as the first, as the Steelheads struck first two minutes into the period with a goal from Dylan Smoskowitz for his second of the night that was assisted by Sam Babintsev and Nick Zottl to bring Mississauga within one of Saginaw, 3-2. The rest of the period remained scoreless as Spirit netminder Jake Paterson matched his counterpart in goal Dawson Carty, save for save.

Once again Mississauga continued their scoring the first goal of the period trend as Brett Foy netted a goal three minutes into the third period that was assisted by Spenser Cobbold to tie the score at three. With 8 minutes remaining in the game, Saginaw took the lead 4-3 with a goal finished off by Andrey Alexeev for his second goal of the night and fourth of the year that was assisted by Eric Locke. To seal the victory Andrey Alexeev fired home an empty netter with assists from Eric Locke and Kristoff Kontos for his third goal of the night becoming the first Spirit player to get a hat trick on the young season and putting the Spirit up 5-3 on the Steelheads, which is how the game ended.
