Shunned MP Eve Adams not likely a candidate for Mississauga mayoral race

August 20, 2014

There’s some strange speculation building about Conservative MP Eve Adams.

According to an article in the Huffington Post, a “mysterious new poll” is propelling a rumour that Adams is exploring a run to replace outgoing Mississauga Mayor Hazel Mcallion.

The article, published on Monday afternoon, cites sources who claim that Adams’ name was included in recent telephone survey along with the other official mayoral candidates.

Despite the poll, the idea of Adams running for mayor seems far-fetched.

Adams – who was a Mississauga city councillor for 8 years before becoming an MP – recently quit a bitter Conservative nomination race in Oakville North Burlington citing health reasons related to a concussion she suffered from earlier this year. The battle saw her reputation take a hit – she had to defend herself over allegations that she was bulldozing her way through the nomination process with illegal advertisements and strong-arm tactics.

Another factor is that Adams now lives in Oakville with her fiance Dimitri Soudas, the former director of communications for Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Moving back to Mississauga just to become mayor probably wouldn’t sit well with the electorate.

The race in Mississauga would also be a tough one to win.

While there’s no real conservative option on the ballot, the two frontrunners – former Liberal MPs Steve Mahoney and Bonnie Crombie – are high profile and have been campaigning for months ahead of the October 27 election.

The latest Forum Research poll has Mahoney with a slight edge over Crombie, 31 per cent to 29 per cent.

With a population of about 714,000, Mississauga is Canada’s sixth largest city.
