Steelheads Drop Game 2 in OT

March 24, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

MISSISSAUGA, ON — Two days after the Mississauga Steelheads were shellshocked in game one of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, the team was looking for a much better effort in the second game of the series. Without their top scorer in Bryson Cianfrone, it seemed like an uphill battle, but the Steelheads were game early on.

Looking for the first goal of the game, the Steelheads broke out on the attack early, however stingy defensive efforts on both sides saw both the Trout and Generals with very little shots on net despite pressure early on. As Alex Lepkowski headed off for intereference four minutes into the game, the Steelheads used the power play to come close on numerous opportunities, however the Generals penalty kill was up to the task, keeping Mississauga off of the board. Mississauga found themselves with a great chance to score as two Steelheads skated in on the Generals’ defence, however contact in front of the net moved the net off to keep the game scoreless. Oshawa would find themselves on the power play following a boarding call, however Josh Sterk sat for interference just 27 seconds into the advantage, sending the game to 4-on-4. With Andrew Goldberg returning to the ice, for an abbreviated man advantage, it would be the Steelheads who struck first as Lucas Venuto found the back of the net, with Goldberg and Sam Babintsev picking up assists on the PP marker at 15:28 of the first. The referees continued to crack down heading into the end of the period as the Generals headed to another man advantage, before the Steelheads wrapped up the period with a power play of their own.

Starting the second with an advantage, the Generals would quickly find themselves on equal footing as yet another call was made to balance the scales just 14 seconds into the period. Seemingly out of nowhere, the Steelheads would score their second of the game as Captain Brett Foy floated a puck on net that would evade Daniel Altshuller to give the Trout a 2-0 advantage at 6:38 of the second. Goldberg picked up his second assist, while Josh Burnside notched a helper as well. The Generals would finally find their first marker late in the period as Bradley Latour picked up his first of the playoffs with just over four minutes to go in the period.

The third period saw much less play at even strength as the teams exchanged power plays through the first half of the period. Josh Sterk would capitalize for the Generals early, as Michael Dal Colle and Hunter Smith picked up assists on his power play marker at 4:16 of the third. Both teams found opportunities to round out the period, capped off by a frantic push by the Steelheads to end the third, however the teams would end the period tied, heading into OT.

Despite trailing on shots heading into the overtime frame, the Steelheads looked very much alive, and nearly ended the game early in the fourth period as Josh Burnside rang a post. Unfortunately for the Trout, an interference call would not go their way, setting the stage for Cole Cassels to finish a pass from Sterk to end the game on the power play at 6:48 of the overtime period.

Spencer Martin made 36 saves in the loss, and Andrew Goldberg’s two assists earned him the second star of the game.

The Trout return home the next two games of the series this week, with both Tuesday and Thursday’s games getting underway at 7:30 PM! Great tickets are still available by logging on to Ticketmaster or visiting the Hershey Centre Box Office! The boys need you Mississauga! Let’s PACK THE POND as the Trout look to even the series!
