Steelheads Fall Short in Pink at the Rink Game

February 9, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

Mississauga, ON – Sunday’s game at the Hershey Centre was the annual Pink at the Rink game, presented by your local State Farm agents. This year’s game featured an Eastern Conference matchup as the Ottawa 67’s were in town for their second visit to Mississauga this year. The two teams last met on January 24th with the Steelheads winning 4-3.

With their commemorative pink jerseys on, the Steelheads hit the ice looking for an important two points in the Eastern Conference playoff race. It would be the road team that would strike first as Daunte Salituro scored his 17th goal of the year to put the 67’s up 1-0. Despite numerous scoring chances, the Steelheads were not able to beat 67’s goalie Philippe Trudeau and the period ended 1-0. Shots on goal after the first were 15-10 in favour of Mississauga.

The 67’s would come out hot to start the 2nd, scoring just 46 seconds into the period as Brendan Bell finished off a nice passing play from Salituro to put Ottawa up 2-0. Not ready to roll over, the Steelheads would fight back as Josh Burnside took a gorgeous between the legs pass from Bryson Cianfrone and beat Trudeau five hole to cut the lead to 2-1. Andrew Goldberg drew the 2nd assist on Burnside’s 10th goal of the year. After some undisciplined played by Ottawa, the Steelheads would find themselves on the power play on more than one occasion, but we unable to beat Trudeau. Just after a Jonathan Dechesne penalty expired, the Steelheads would tie the game up at 2 as Goldberg scored his 13th of the year with assists to Burnside and Jammes. Goldberg rifled a shot in the high slot, beating Trudeau high glove side to knot the game at 2. The Steelheads dictated the pace of the play in the second and held the advantage in shots once again at 14-9.

The third period was a physical one, with a number of good chances on both ends. Travis Koenecny would eventually step up for the 67’s, dancing through the Steelheads defence to regain Ottawa’s lead. Bradford and Lintuniemi drew the assists on Konecny’s goal. With time winding down in the 3rd the Steelheads pulled Martin in hopes of pushing the game to overtime, but Lintuniemi gained control of the puck, dumping it from his own zone into the empty net to secure a 4-2 win.

The Steelheads would like to give a big thank you to our local State Farm agents for helping make today’s Pink at the Rink initiative a huge success. The Steelheads head to Kitchener for a Valentine’s Day showdown before returning home on Monday, February 17th for a Family Day matinee against the Sudbury Wolves.
