Steelheads Fall to Battalion

November 1, 2014

October 31, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

MISSISSAUGA, ON — After dropping a 4-1 decision yesterday against Peterborough, the Steelheads looked to get back in the win column tonight as they played host to division rivals, the North Bay Battalion for their Halloween game. Stefan LeBlanc was welcomed back to the lineup, as the Trout’s blue line was without Sean Day as he and rookie Mikey McLeod are in Sarnia, Ontario to take part in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Early on in the period, the Battalion picked off a breakout attempt just behind Spencer Martin, and had a chance on net, but Martin steered away the opportunity. Just after the five minute mark, the Steelheads would find themselves on the penalty kill. Shortly into the kill, the Battalion would take a penalty of their own. Marcus McIvor picked up the puck and fired a shot home to open the scoring. On the ensuing power play, Greg DiTomaso sent in a hard pass from the point, which Bryson Cianfrone tipped just wide. After the midway point in the period, the Trout would head back to the mad advantage, but couldn’t convert on the opportunity. Nathan Bastian showed good energy tonight, as he joined Sam Babintsev and Cianfrone on the Steelheads top line.

The Trout opened up the middle frame with a flurry of chances, testing goalie Jake Smith who was equal to the task. The physical play of Damian Bourne and Brandon Devlin ignited the Steelheads’ play. Babintsev had the best chance of the first few minutes, as he picked up the puck in the neutral zone, stepped into North Bay’s end, and wired a shot into the glove of Smith. A couple minutes later, DiTomaso launched a clearing attempt over the heads of the Battalion defence, Lucas Venuto corralled it in his feet and managed a shot on goal. Shots were fairly even through forty minutes of this one; the Trout trailed 19 – 23.

The Trout found themselves on the penalty kill early on in the third, but successfully killed off the chance. Five minutes in, Mathew Santos would find the board, as his first of the season would give the Battalion a two goal lead. The Steelheads were held without a goal on a power play chance, but it was not for lack of effort. The attack on the man advantage coming courtesy of Mississauga native Nick Paul, was the best put forth by the Trout in the game. Jake Smith made some timely saves to preserve the shutout. Brendan Miller would ice the game for North Bay, by netting a goal on the man advantage. The power play marker was the first the Trout had allowed at home this season. The Mississauga News three stars of the game were Jake Smith, Mathew Santos and Bryson Cianfrone.

The Steelheads are at home again this Sunday, November 2 as the Niagara IceDogs pay another visit to the Hershey Centre. Great tickets are still available online through Ticketmaster and at the Hershey Centre box office. Be sure to follow the Steelheads on Twitter (@OHLSteelheads), Facebook (/SteelheadsOHL).
