Steelheads Fight Hard All Series, Gens Move On

March 28, 2014

March 28, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

MISSISSAUGA, ON – Coming off a marathon Tuesday night that saw the Steelheads and Generals finish in double overtime, the Trout were looking for a big effort in an elimination game. With the Generals leading the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series three games to zero, the Mississauga faithful “packed the pond” in support of the blue and white.

It was the Generals who would strike first, as Josh Sterk put home his fifth of the postseason just 1:38 into the first period. The Steelheads would not be outdone however, as Bryson Cianfrone answered for the Trout just under three minutes later; Lucas Venuto and Sam Babintsev picked up the assists on the Cianfrone’s first of the postseason. The teams would exchange chances in the end-to-end action, but Mississauga would find the lead with five minutes to play in the period. After the puck took a funny bounce off the glass, Josh Burnside found himself the benefactor, picking up his first of the postseason to make it 2-1 Mississauga. Stefan LeBlanc and Jared Walsh picked up the assists on the go-ahead goal. Oshawa would respond less than three minutes later with the man advantage, as Michael Dal Colle scored his fifth of the postseason, tying the game. The Steelheads came close, buzzing on a late power play, however Altshuller shut the door, sending the teams into the break tied at 2. Mississauga held a slight advantage in an offensive-minded first period, outshooting the Generals 14-13.

After a frantic first period that saw the teams exchange chances and goals, the second was relatively tame on the score sheet. Cassels and Cianfrone would exchange slashing calls at the 5:22 mark of the period, while the Generals turned up the heat on offense. Despite the effort, active sticks and solid positioning helped the Steelheads turn away the attack and generate chances of their own. Oshawa would finally break the tie with four and a half minutes to play in the period, as Scott Laughton took advantage of a Trout double-minor to make it 3-2, the Generals’ second power play marker of the game would be the only goal scored in the period.

The Steelheads came out flying in the third, looking for an equalizer in their “sink or swim” game. The Trout would find a great chance with Bryson Cianfrone coming close, early in the period. Their next chance would come with Hunter Smith in the box for boarding, unfortunately the Steelheads would be unable to find an equalizer on the advantage. Finally, after James Boyd called a timeout, Spencer Martin left the net, and nothing else could possibly happen – it was a redirection by Sam Babintsev with just over a minute to play that would knot the game, sending Oshawa and Mississauga to another overtime.

Heading into their ninth period of hockey in two games at The Chocolate Factory, the Steelheads were determined to score and send the series back to Oshawa for Game 6. Unfortunately, the Generals would head to the power play just 54 seconds into the extra frame, where it would be Hunter Smith who would tuck in the game-winning goal at 1:37 of the period. Bryson Cianfrone was named the first star of the game, with two points in the game, and Spencer Martin’s 37 saves earned him the second star.

The Steelheads would like to thank all of the fans that came out to support us tonight, and over the course of the entire season.
