Steelheads Iced by 67's

December 20, 2014

December 19, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

Mississauga, ON – The Steelheads started their second consecutive three-game weekend tonight, hosting the Ottawa 67’s for the first time this season.

Damian Bourne helped set the pace of the game for Mississauga. Laying several hits on his first shift, Bourne ignited Mississauga’s physical play. Ottawa had a pair of chances early on, but Sean Day and Justin Bean made solid defensive plays to break up the chances. Dante Salituro gave Ottawa the lead, following up on a two-on-one. Mississauga replied with a three-on-one on the very next rush, but couldn’t get a pass across the slot to convert. Mikey McLeod created another chance shortly after, redirecting a shot just high of the net as Mississauga began to press. The Steelheads were forced to the penalty kill in the latter half of the first period, but were able to kill off the chance. Kevin Groulx got his stick up on Spencer Martin, sending the Trout to the power play. Day, Nathan Bastian and McLeod had a beauty of a passing play on the man advantage, but Leo Lazarev stood tall in net for Ottawa. Everett Clark was tripped on a partial break with 12 seconds left in the frame, so the Steelheads would start the second period on the power play.

The Steelheads came out strong in the second, generating a number of chances on the power play and the shift immediately after. The 67’s got a lucky one, as Martin lost sight of the puck amidst a scrum in front of his net and Kevin Groulx slid a rebound past him. The Steelheads were all around the net, out-chancing the 67’s in the period, but simply could not make the most of their opportunities. In the final minute of the middle frame, Ottawa captain Travis Konecny extended the lead to three goals, scoring glove side on Martin.

Trailing by three, the Steelheads sensed the need for urgency in the final twenty minutes of this one. Sam Babintsev broke the shutout seven minutes into the frame, as he and Jimmy Lodge executed a crafty passing play that started from their own blue line. Lazarev was shaken up on the play, but stayed in the game. Lodge and Babintsev provided a bump in offence toMississauga in their return, but the goal was all the Steelheads could muster. As a four-on-four situation expired, Nathan Todd scored while the 67’s were shorthanded, icing the game fo Ottawa.
