Steelheads Nominated for Year-End Awards

March 31, 2015

March 31, 2015 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

MISSISSAUGA – A trio of Mississauga Steelheads are listed among the finalists for various Ontario Hockey League year-end awards.

Mikey McLeod’s performance through his first season in the league was good enough for a rookie of the year nomination while Spencer Martin was named a finalist for goaltender of the year despite playing only half of the season due to a knee injury.

Finally, Sam Babintsev is Mississauga’s nominee for the Red Tilson Trophy, given each year to the OHL’s most outstanding player.

Along with 2014 first overall draft pick Jakob Chychrun of the Sarnia Sting, McLeod is the only rookie of the year nominee born in 1998, the first year of junior hockey eligibility. The other four candidates were born a year earlier.

McLeod, a Lorne Park native, finished the year with 29 points (12 goals and 17 assists) in 63 games and was also on one of three Canadian teams at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in November.

In his fourth, and likely final, season with Mississauga, Martin finished third in the league in save percentage (.921) and ninth in goals against average (2.98) while compiling a 15-13-1 record before suffering a season-ending knee injury on Dec. 21.

He’s expected to heal by next season and will likely begin his pro career in the Colorado Avalanche farm system.

Babintsev finished third in team scoring with 46 points (18 goals and 28 assists) in 54 games and earned OHL player of the week honours in early February.

He’s one of three overagers on the Steelheads who are moving on next season. He’s going home to his native Russia and is slated to play in the Kontinental Hockey League.
