Steelheads Preview: January 30-31

January 30, 2015
By

January 29, 2015 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

The Steelheads lost their first of a three-game road trip last night in North Bay. Jacob Brennan did his best to keep the Steelheads in the game, following up his 47-save performance Sunday with 31 saves last night, but Mississauga could not keep North Bay’s offence at bay.

When the Steelheads scored their lone goal early in the second period, they drew even with the Battalion at 1-1. The Trout got some life back after the goal, and sustained pressure on the Troops through the first half of the middle frame.

After the midpoint of the game, North Bay took over. They scored three goals in the final 10 minutes of the second period and added one more in the third, taking the decision by a final score of 5-1. The Steelheads penalty kill was a perfect 3-for-3 in the loss.

The Steelheads continue on to Sudbury to take on the Wolves on Friday. In four games this season, the Steelheads have not dropped a decision.

On December 21, the Wolves forced a shootout at the Hershey Centre, but Cameron Zanussi – entering the game for the injured Spencer Martin – stood tall in the victory.

The Steelheads have played at Sudbury Community Arena twice already this season, and have outscored the Wolves 9-3 over that span.

The Wolves are struggling significantly, having lost their last 15 consecutive games. A win would give Mississauga a big two points in a tight playoff race, and this is a game the Steelheads can’t afford to lose.

From there, the Trout will travel to Sault Ste. Marie to wrap up their season series with the Greyhounds. These teams met in Mississauga last Friday, and the Steelheads certainly held their own in the affair.

Despite taking a loss in the game, the Steelheads chased not one, but both goaltenders from the Soo net.

New York Rangers draft pick Brandon Halverson started the game, but allowed three goals on just eight shots. Rookie back-up Joseph Raaymakers was in to start the second, but didn’t fare much better allowing two goals on five shots. Halverson returned to the game for the third period and finally put a stop to Mississauga’s offence.

The Steelheads fell to the Greyhounds by a score of 7-5, but for a team that had been struggling offensively, there were many positives to take away from the game.

Sault Ste. Marie is on an eight-game win streak. Their last loss came at the hands of the league-leading Oshawa Generals.
