Steelheads Preview: January 9

January 11, 2015

January 9, 2015 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

The Mississauga Steelheads kick off a three-game road trip with visits to Guelph and Oshawa this weekend, before heading to Niagara on Tuesday. The Steelheads have lost their last three games, but have managed a point in two of them and have won four of their last five on the road.

Currently in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, the 17-18-2-1 Steelheads are just three points behind the fourth place Belleville Bulls.

In their last road game, the Trout lost just their first shootout of the season. Even with the loss, the Steelheads still sit atop the league in the shootout.

The Guelph Storm have won two straight games as they head into Friday’s contest and will bring with them some positive momentum. That being said, the Storm have only won two of their last five games at the Sleeman Centre.

This is the first of two meetings with the Guelph Storm for the Steelheads this season. The series will wrap up on February 22, as the Storm pay their lone visit to the Hershey Centre.

Like Guelph, Oshawa enters the weekend games on a win streak – three games – but will have to make visits to both Kingston and Peterborough before Sunday’s tilt wit the Trout.

Mississauga will perhaps have an advantage over a Generals team that will be playing their third game in three days.

In two games this season, the teams have split decisions, but Oshawa has managed three of a possible four points.

In Mississauga’s home opener, the Steelheads outlasted a mounting Generals comeback, as then newcomer Brandon Devlin won the game in overtime.

The Gens visited the Steelheads again for their School Day Game, and won handily by a score of 7-2.

In their third meeting this season, this is the first one to take place at General Motors Centre in Oshawa.

The Steelheads announced Thursday that they have claimed overage goaltender, Jacob Brennan off waviers from the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. The four-year veteran has played in 182 total QMJHL games.

This season, Brennan has a 9-17-2-1 record playing for last place Acadie-Bathurst with a 3.61 goals against average and a 0.879 save percentage.

Brennan (182 GP) brings with him a wealth of experience playing at the Major Junior level, something that Mississauga’s current rookie tandem of Cameron Zanussi (11 GP) and Leif Hertz (2 GP) can learn from.

Mikey McLeod is on a three-game point streak. McLeod has recently moved to Mssissauga’s top line, centering Sam Babintsev and Jimmy Lodge.

Sean Day (2G, 3A) and Jimmy Lodge (4G, 5A) are both enjoying five-game point streaks. This is the second time this season they have each achieved a five-game streak.

Brandon Devlin (2G, 6A) is currently on a six-game point streak, the longest of his career. He recently surpassed Josh Burnside for fourth in team scoring.

Mississauga is 2-4-0-0 against Midwest Division opponents

Guelph is 5-1-0-0 against Central Division opponents

Mississauga is 6-5-0-1 versus East Division opponents

Oshawa is 9-2-1-0 versus Central Division opponents

Don’t miss them too much, the Steelheads will return to the Hershey Centre on Friday, January 16 following their three-game road trip! Seats are available through Ticketmaster.
