Mississauga, ON – The 2014 U16 OHL Gold Cup kicked off yesterday morning at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. On day one of the four day event, 6 Mississauga Steelhead prospects took to the ice looking to lead their respective teams to victory and to get one step closer to being crowned Gold Cup champions.

Team GTHL Blue is lead by Steelheads 2014 first round (5th overall) centreman Michael McLeod. Along with McLeod on Team GTHL Blue is goaltender Kasimir Krol (4th round, 75th overall), and left winger Jacob Harris (10th round, 185th overall).

The Steelheads’ second round pick (25th Overall) centre Luke Kutkevicius is representing Team GTHL.

Defenseman Nicolas Hague, the Steelheads other second round pick (29th overall) will be on the blue line for Team ALLIANCE.

Rounding the list of Steelheads prospects participating in the U16 OHL Gold Cup is left winger Alex Way (9th round, 165th overall) who will be suiting up for Team HEO.

Day one of the tournament saw success across the board for each Steelheads’ prospect and their respective teams. In Team GTHL Blue’s 3-2 victory over Team OMHA White Jacob Harris helped set up the first two goals of the game recording two assists in the winning effort. Kasimir Krol got the start in net making 25 saves on 27 shots while earning the victory. Krol’s .926 save percentage is tied for second best in the tournament so far.

Luke Kutkevicius and his GTHL Red teammates finished with the largest victory of day one as they defeated Team NOHA by a whopping score of 13-1.

Nicolas Hague helped get Team ALLIANCE’s scoring going in their first game. After being down 1-0 he helped get an assist on their first goal against Team OMHA Black. His efforts helped Team Alliance get the victory by a score of 5-2.

For Alex Way and Team HEO the round-robin started off well as they defeated Team HNO by a 4-2 score. But in their second game they suffered a 5-3 defeat against Team OMHA White. Alex Way did his best to get his team back into the game as he notched 2 goals and 1 assist in the loss. Way’s 3 points have him tied for second in tournament scoring after day one.

Expect day two of the U16 OHL Gold Cup to be as exciting as day one with each Steelheads’ prospect looking to help their team make it out of the round-robin and into the playoffs.
