Steelheads Stumped by Generals' Front Line

November 19, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

MISSISSAUGA, ON — The Steelheads took the ice at a special time on Wednesday morning for their annual School Day Game presented by Enersource. In front of a full house of screaming fans, they played host to the Oshawa Generals in the 11:00 AM tilt. The Trout were energized by their fans and came out firing in the first period, taking an early lead on the shot clock. Although they were the first team to head to the power play, it was the Generals’ four-man unit that proved effective, keeping the game scoreless early. The physical play of both teams escalated quickly and a scrum in Oshawa’s zone resulted in offsetting minor penalties. The Generals had a few chances 4-on-4 but Spencer Martin and the Steelheads defence were there to eliminate the chance. With the Generals on the power play, it would be Michael Dal Colle opening the scoring, sending a wrist-shot through traffic and into the net. Less than a minute later, Oshawa had another offensive chance, but a sprawling Martin made not one, but two saves while stretching out at the side of his net.

Just two minutes into the middle frame, a rebound escaped Martin’s grasp and landed on the stick of Oshawa’s Josh Sterk, who made no mistake getting on the board. The Generals pushed the play early on in the second, opening up a 7-2 gap in shots. Steelheads forward, Jesse Barwell made a nice inside-out move to get behind the Oshawa defence, but Jeremy Brodeur made a pad save on the chance. Six minutes in, the Steelheads headed to the power play, and looked to turn the momentum in their favour with a goal. Although they had several chances, the Generals continued their sound defensive play. Three minutes later, Dal Colle sent a cross-crease pass that was deflected into the net by a Mississauga defenceman. Anthony Cirelli added another for the Generals, finishing off a Sterk pass on the backhand to extend Oshawa’s lead to four goals. Less than a minute later, the Steelheads would bring the fans to their feet as Jared Walsh ripped down the wing, beating Broduer high glove side to cut the lead to 4-1. In the last minute of play in the second, the short-handed Steelheads would generate another strong scoring chance as Barwell fed Nathan Bastian alone in front of the net, but was robbed by Brodeur, keeping the score at 4-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Cameron Zanussi started the third period in goal for the Steelheads, but did not get the start he and the Trout were looking for. With the Steelheads down a man, Cole Cassels would score his 10th of the season to extend the Generals’ lead to 5-1. The Trout were down, but not out in this one, as they found ways to create offensive chances. They were rewarded with their perseverance with 8:30 left in regulation. Josh Burnside entered the zone, dished to Cianfrone, who found Burnside on the doorstep with a return pass for a backhand goal. Unfortunately, the Generals would find the back of the net twice more before the end of the game, wrapping up an Oshawa victory.
