Steelheads Swim Past Otters

September 14, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

Oakville, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads capped off their preseason with a game against the Erie Otters at Sixteen Mile Creek Sports Complex in Oakville in front of a screaming crowd of over 1,000 fans Sunday afternoon.

Coming off two disappointing home losses, the Steelheads were looking to rebound and finish off the pre-season on a high note. Dawson Carty and Cameron Zanussi split time in net for the Steelheads, with Carty seeing the first 30 minutes of action.

Josh Burnside started on the blue line; he predominately played on the wing last season but was drafted a defenceman. Wasting no time, it was Burnside’s defense partner, Greg DiTomaso who opened the scoring. DiTomaso capitalized off a Bryson Cianfrone rebound to make it 1-0 for the Steelheads less than 40 seconds into the game.

The Steelheads 1-0 lead was short lives as Connor McDavid made a cross net pass to Alex DeBrincat to tie the game at one. Shaking off the DeBrincat goal, Lucas Venuto pulled Mississauga ahead again with a shot hard enough to send goaltender, Daniel Dekoning’s water bottle air born.

The Trout added two more goals before the intermission; Nick Zottl tipped in an Andrew Goldberg shot to make it 3-1, and momentum from a Josh Burnside dinger off the post propelled Cody Thompson to slide the puck past Dekoning.

With just over a minute left in the first and the Steelheads on the penalty kill, Carty made two huge saves including one on Mississauga native, Dylan Strome. However, just 7 seconds later the Otters were finally able to capitalize as Alex DeBrincat notched his second of the game. Mississauga went into the first intermission up 4-2.

With the second period underway, it would be Erie’s turn to get the quick goal as Connor McDavid cut down the Steelheads’ lead to make it 4-3. The Otters would have another chance to tie things up as a hooking penalty saw Bobby MacIntyre head to the box. Everett Clark would buy the Steelheads some more security as he stripped Erie of the puck, jumping on a short-handed breakaway to make it 5-3.

Cameron Zanussi entered the game midway through the second with the Steelheads on the penalty kill. Getting right into the action, he closed the door on several Otter power play attempts, but was unable to hold off Erie’s two-man advantage as Alex DeBrincat got his third of the game. DeBrincat would add another shortly after to tie the game at five. With three minutes to play in the middle frame, Bryson Cianfrone notched a power play goal to put the Trout in the lead once again, 6-5 heading into the third period.

A minute and a half into the final frame, Dylan Strome tied the game at 6 off a shot from the blue line that trickled past Zanussi. The physical play continued at both ends of the ice as each team pushed for the go-ahead goal.

With under five to play, Andrew Goldberg found Greg DiTomaso to break the tie. Sam Babinstev sealed the deal a minute later making it 8-6 and giving the Steelheads a home win in their final game of the pre-season.

The Steelheads kick off the regular season at home on Friday, September 26th at 7:30 pm against the Oshawa Generals. Season tickets, 6 and 12 game flex packs and individual game tickets are all on sale now.
