Steelheads Take Bite out of IceDogs

February 23, 2014

February 23, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

Mississauga, ON – The Mississauga IceDogs were in town Sunday afternoon in a game that could have some serious playoff implications for both teams. Currently sitting in 7th and 8th place respectively, the Steelheads and IceDogs face off two more times before the end of the season. Steelheads were looking to rebound after a home loss to Peterborough on Friday and the IceDogs were fresh off a home win last night over the Battalion.

It was evident early on that the goalies would be on display today as both teams pelted the other with shots right from the get go. Steelheads goalie Spencer Martin and IceDogs goalie Brent Moran, were both up to the challenge, stopping everything sent their way. Both teams had their chances on the power play, with Mississauga and Niagara both taking two trips to the sin bin in the first. Despite chances for both teams, the first period ended scoreless. Shots on goal after one were 12-11 in favour of Mississauga.

After a strong finish to the first period, the Steelheads would be rewarded half way through the second as Sean Day scored his 4th goal of the year to put the Steelheads up 1-0. With the teams at 4 on 4 after offsetting penalties, Day finished off a great passing play from Sam Babintsev to put the home team ahead. The 2nd assist on the goal went to Bobby MacIntyre. The Steelheads special teams worked overtime in the second period, killing off three minor penalties and Spencer Martin made key saves when called upon to keep the Steelheads up 1-0 after 40 minutes. The shots on goal after 2 were 22-20 in favour of Mississauga.

The Steelheads got some insurance early in the third as Josh Burnside scored his 11th goal of the year, converting a one timer from Steelheads Captain, Brett Foy. The IceDogs created a number of good scoring chances on the power play but Martin stood tall to preserve the 2-0 lead. Late in the 3rd with Foy off for hooking, the IceDogs would have one last power play chance to get on the board. Even with the net empty and the extra attacker on the ice, the IceDogs were not able to get one past Martin who recorded his 3rd shutout of the season in a 2-0 win for the Steelheads. Final shots on goal were 35-31 in favour of Niagara.

The Steelheads head to Niagara on Thursday before returning home to host the Oshawa Generals for a 7:30 pm start at the Hershey Centre.
