Steelheads to Host Tribute Night for Mayor Hazel McCallion

October 10, 2014

October 8, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

Mississauga, ON – It will be a very special night at the Hershey Centre on Friday, November 14th as the Mississauga Steelheads will be hosting a tribute night to honour Mayor Hazel McCallion, when they take on their central division rivals, the Sudbury Wolves at 7:30 pm. The Mayor, one of Canada’s longest serving city leaders will be stepping down from office after an incredible 36-year term as the Mayor of Mississauga.

Mayor McCallion’s love of hockey dates all the way back to when she began playing the sport in the late 1920s, in Port Daniel on the Gaspe coast of Quebec. She would later turn professional playing for Kik Cola, one of three teams in an all women’s hockey league in Montreal, Quebec. She has been a major supporter of junior hockey in Mississauga since OHL hockey first came to Mississauga, back in 1998. Mayor McCallion was also a driving force in the building of the Steelheads’ home, the Hershey Centre, and has been an integral part of making OHL hockey work in Mississauga. Along with being a player and proud supporter of hockey, Mayor McCallion has also spent time sitting on the board of Ontario Women’s Hockey League, ensuring the growth of women’s hockey all across the province. Steelheads owner, Elliott Kerr, has been proud to call the Mayor a friend for many years. “Hazel has been a great supporter of hockey in Mississauga and more specifically our Steelheads franchise. We hope residents from all across the City will come out and show their support for our great Mayor. She has been a great leader for this City and a great friend.”

Be sure to join us on November 14th as we show our gratitude and appreciation in honouring Mississauga’s Mayor McCallion. Great seats are still available! Log on to Ticketmaster to purchase your tickets, print at home, and beat the box office lines!
