Steelheads Trounced by IceDogs

December 29, 2014

December 29, 2014 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

MISSISSAUGA, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads returned to the ice on Sunday afternoon after a week-long holiday break. Cameron Zanussi got the start between the pipes for the Trout, looking to build off his first career Ontario Hockey League victory last Sunday against the Sudbury Wolves.

The Steelheads jumped out on to the attack early in the game with an aggressive forecheck and great play along the boards. They found themselves with their first opportunity of the game as Graham Knott headed to the box on a double-minor for high sticking, however, despite great pressure on the advantage, Mississauga was unable to beat Brandon Hope. Riding the momentum from the penalty kill, Niagara would find the scoreboard first as Matt Gillard let a wrister go from the slot for his second goal of the year, assisted by Josh Ho-Sang and Carter Verhaeghe. Niagara would keep the pressure on for the rest of the period, outshooting the Trout by a wide margin; Zanussi would keep them in the game however, turning away opportunity after opportunity. Late in the period, Niagara would extend their lead to three with a pair of goals in a 28-second span to end the period.

Looking to rebound in the second period, Sean Day wasted no time, scoring on the first shot of the frame to pull Mississauga within one. The teams would then exchange goals as Jordan Maletta scored his second of the game just two minutes later. Sam Babintsev would respond two minutes after that, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with Jimmy Lodge; Brandon Devlin also picked up an assist on the play. Lucas Venuto would then pull the Trout within one goal, tapping home a perfect pass from Josh Burnside at 7:19 of the period. That would be all of the offense in the frame, as Mississauga headed to the room trailing by one goal.

The Steelheads would falter early in the third period, taking a penalty at the 47 second mark of the period. The IceDogs took full advantage of the early advantage as Ho-Sang picked up his second point of the game with a power play marker from Verhaeghe and Vince Dunn. Niagara’s power play would strike once again with six minutes to play as Aaron Haydon blasted home a shot from Blake Siebenaler and Billy Jenkins. Despite outshooting the IceDogs in the final frame, the Trout were unable to solve Hope, as Niagara wrapped up a 6-3 victory
