Two dead in Mississauga collision

MISSISSAUGA –

Two people were killed when a tractor-trailer smashed into a taxi and the car exploded in flame in Mississauga.

Peel Regional Police said the crash occurred just after 4 a.m. Saturday on Hurontario St. at Derry Rd.

Const. Thomas Ruttan said circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

Investigators believe the northbound tractor trailer struck the taxi from behind, possibly as it was stopped at the intersection.

The impact sent the taxi skyrocketing “approximately 100 metres” up Hurontario St., Ruttan said, adding the cab came to rest in a ditch on the west side north of Derry Rd.

Two people inside the taxi were unable to escape the fiery wreckage.

“I can confirm that the driver of the cab and one passenger have succumbed to their injuries,” Ruttan said .

The bodies remained in the vehicle for hours after the crash while police reconstructed the event.

“The scene inside is horrific,” Ruttan said of the taxi, which was so badly burned its paint melted away.

He said the victims’ names may not be released until they are positively identified by the coroner, likely through dental records.

However, a neighbour told The Sun the cab driver was Adnan Junejo and he lived in Mississauga.

“He was a young man, father of two small kids,” Naveed Muhammad Chaudhry said. “May God bless his soul.

The Moe’s Transport Trucking transport, from Windsor, came to rest just south of the intersection at Derry Rd., with only minor damage. There were no skid marks visible behind the tractor trailer.

Ruttan said “it’s too early” to say if it was the severity of the impact that sent the cab flying so far down the road.

“I think it would be remiss for us to speculate that at this point,” he said. “There are many aspects our collision bureau will investigate to determine what exactly moved that car in that direction and for that distance.”

There is some speculation the taxi’s propane fuel tank exploded on impact, which may have been a factor.

“We are looking for witnesses who may have seen what took place,” Ruttan said. “We’re asking them to come forward to our Major Collision Bureau to speak with investigators and help piece together what has taken place here.”

Anyone with information should call investigators at 905-453-2121, ext. 3710.
